By car:
You can park in the car park directly at the entrance to Vlkolínec. From Ružomberok, take road 59 (E77) southbound towards Banská Bystrica. Approximately 6 km from Ružomberok, you will enter the district of Biely Potok. On the right, you will pass the Restaurant Vlčí Dvor. Immediately after, turn right, cross the bridge over the Revúca River, then turn right again. After about 300 metres, turn left at the replica of the Vlkolínec belfry. The road through Trlenská Valley will lead you to your destination. Signposts along the way will help to navigate you.
Please note the speed limit through Trlenská Valley is restricted due to the narrow road and the presence of pedestrians and cyclists – please be considerate.
Motor vehicles are not permitted to enter the village itself.
By private coach (organised groups):
Coaches may only reach as far as the car park in Trlenská Valley. They cannot continue beyond this point.
Visitors must walk the remaining distance.
1. On foot along the access road: From the car park, it takes about 15 minutes to reach Vlkolínec along the access road. The path is roughly 1.1 km long and includes a covered rest area. Along the way, you will find two springs, with a view of the Veľká Fatra mountains opening up at the last bend.
2. On foot along the Hôrka trail:: From the car park, continue on the road to Vlkolínec past the spring, and at the point where the road crosses a stream, turn right off the road into Hôrka valley. The trail follows the stream into Vlkolínec. Along the way, there are educational panels, a renovated hay hut, and benches for resting. This 0.8 km route also takes about 15 minutes, plus extra time if you stop to read the information panels.
By taxi:
You can reach Vlkolínec by taxi from the centre of Ružomberok, which is 11 km away. A one-way fare typically ranges from €15 to €20, depending on the taxi service used.
By bike:
Three marked cycle routes pass through Vlkolínec, each approaching from a different direction:
1. Through Trlenská Valley: From the railway (coach) station, take red cycle route 006 across the Váh River. Shortly after, cross another bridge over the Revúca River and continue on red route 033. After crossing the Revúca again, the educational cycle trail “Cyklokorytnička” runs alongside the route until the replica belfry in front of Trlenská Valley, where you leave it. From here, follow the yellow cycle route 8419 leading into Vlkolínec. The entire 10.4 km route is paved with asphalt roads and paths. This is the easiest route with the least elevation gain, making it suitable for road bikes, but please bear in mind that it runs along country roads with normal traffic.
2. Below Krkavá Skala (“Raven Rock”): From the railway (coach) station, take red cycle route 006 across the Váh River. Shortly after, cross another bridge over the Revúca River and continue on red route 033. Before the bridge on the red route, turn right onto green route 5422. This path leads beneath the guesthouse Penzión Gejdák, where the asphalt ends and a gravel road begins, running through meadows alongside Krkavá Skala into Vlkolínec. The 7.2 km route passes along paved roads for 4 km and gravel for 3.2 km. This route is more challenging as it has greater elevation and is unsuitable for road bikes. From Penzión Gejdák onwards, it follows a road with no car traffic.
3. Across Vlkolínec Meadows: From the railway (coach) station, take red cycle route 006 across the Váh River. Shortly after, cross another bridge over the Revúca River and continue right on blue route 2418. This route takes you through the Kalvária (Calvary) area of Ružomberok into a forest. When leaving the forest, turn off the tarmac onto the reinforced dirt road. Soon you reach a farm below Sidorov, where you leave the blue route and continue on a dirt road/path to the top of Vlkolínec Meadows, following yellow cycle route 8419. The descent into Vlkolínec is on a paved path/trail. On this stretch, cyclists must dismount and push their bikes. This is for safety reasons, especially on the steep final section. The 7.2 km route passes along asphalt roads for 5.5 km and reinforced and dirt gravel roads for 1.7 km. This route is more challenging as it has the most elevation and is unsuitable for road bikes. From Kalvária to Vlkolínec Meadows, the route has restricted vehicle access (leading to the Malinô Brdo resort), while from the meadows to Vlkolínec it is a car-free dirt road/trail.
In Vlkolínec itself, cycling is prohibited, and bicycles must be pushed at all times. Please observe all traffic rules and remember that pedestrians have priority over cyclists on all routes.
On foot:
Vlkolínec can be reached via several hiking trails, nature trails, and even unmarked tracks, offering routes of differing lengths and levels of difficulty.
1. Through Trlenská Valley from Biely Potok: This route follows the access road into Vlkolínec and is mostly marked with cycle route signs.
There are two options for starting the trail:
(a) From the municipal bus stop “Biely Potok”, reachable by bus from Ružomberok.
After alighting, follow the road leading away from the town, past family houses (running parallel to the main road). After the last house, there is a footbridge across the Revúca River. Cross the river and turn right. From this point, both options merge.
(b) From the regional bus stop “Ružomberok, Biely Potok, Trlenská dolina”, served by suburban buses from Ružomberok.
After getting off the bus, follow the road that branches off from the main road. After a few metres, cross the Revúca River via the bridge and turn right. From here, the route is identical to option (a).
Continue along the road until you reach the replica of the Vlkolínec belfry. Turn left and, a few steps further on, cross another bridge. Carry on through Trlenská Valley, where you will first come across a water spring, followed by educational panels on local points of interest. Where the road bends to the right, there is a rest area, with more information boards. Continue along the road for about 300 metres until you reach a small bridge. Here, you have two options:
(a) Via Hôrka trail: leave the road (go right) and descend into the Hôrka Valley. The trail follows the stream into Vlkolínec. Along the way, there are educational panels, a renovated hay hut, and benches for resting.
(b) Via the access road: continue along the road, passing another spring and, a little further on, a sheltered rest stop. Just before reaching Vlkolínec, a bend in the road provides a lovely view of the Veľká Fatra mountain range.
2. Following the yellow trail from Biely Potok: This route climbs steeply from the Biely Potok district along a path above Vlkolínec, before descending into the village. It is marked with yellow hiking trail signs.
Begin at the “Pri moste” stop (for municipal buses) or the “Ružomberok, Biely Potok, pri moste” stop (for regional buses), served by buses from Ružomberok.
Follow the yellow-marked trail, crossing the Revúca River over the bridge and continuing to the end of the street. Turn right, then shortly afterwards, turn left uphill between the houses. After the last house on the left, turn left again to reach a meadow with views of the surrounding landscape. Climb uphill through the meadow until you reach the forest. A woodland path leads to a small clearing with a raised hide and feeding stations for game (hidden among the trees). Bear slightly left and follow the well-trodden footpath to another meadow below Sidorovo peak. Cross the meadow to reach a reinforced road and turn left. The road offers scenic views and soon leads directly into Vlkolínec.
3. Following the green trail from Ružomberok town centre: This route begins in the centre of Ružomberok, follows the old Royal Way, skirts Sidorovo peak above Vlkolínec, and descends into the village. It is mostly marked with green hiking trail signs.
Start your walk in front of the Municipal Authority building by the Marian Column. Follow the green trail through a lime tree avenue, past the Jesuit church, and turn left at the crossroads. Continue past houses and blocks of flats through the Baničné housing estate. After the last building on the street called “Cesta na Vlkolínec”, turn left onto the gravel path. Pass the allotments and join the paved road. Turn right – this road leads below the guesthouse Penzión Gejdák, though your route does not go there. Continue along the surfaced road, passing more allotments and the edge of a forest, through meadows, until you reach the natural monument Krkavá Skala. Here, there is an educational panel and a rest stop. At this point, you have two options:
(a) Via the cycle trail: From Krkavá Skala, follow the road to the meadows and descend into Vlkolínec. This is an easy route that offers panoramic views.
(b) Via the hiking trail: A few metres beyond Krkavá Skala, turn right onto the path that runs through the forest above Vlkolínec. The trail occasionally reveals glimpses of the village and its surroundings. Continue until you join a gravel road, then turn left downhill. At this point, the path connects with the yellow-marked hiking trail, which leads into Vlkolínec. This route is slightly more demanding, as it climbs higher above the village than the road option.
4. Following the blue trail from Ružomberok town centre: This route leads from Ružomberok along the access road towards Malinô Brdo. It takes you to Vlkolínec Meadows, from where you descend into the village. It is mostly marked with blue and yellow hiking trail signs.
Start your walk in front of the Municipal Authority building by the Marian Column. Follow the blue trail through a lime tree avenue, past the Jesuit church, towards the Kalvária area of Ružomberok. Pass between the chapels, and climb to the viewpoint offering panoramic views of the town. The trail then continues along a road to a forest. Here, you can either remain on the road (also marked as a blue cycle route), or take the parallel forest path on the left. Both options rejoin at the point where the path emerges from the forest onto Vlkolínec Meadows. At the meadows, turn left off the tarmac onto a reinforced trail – leaving the blue trail and continuing along the yellow marked hiking trail. You pass a shelter and several educational panels on the way to the Farm under Sidorovo. At the farm, turn left along the ridge and descend past another shelter with an information panel to the spring (which is often dry in summer). The gravel path here then leads you into Vlkolínec.
5. Following the yellow trail from Hrabovo: The route begins at Hrabovo’s lower cable car station to Malinô Brdo, and follows the access road to that resort. It takes you to Vlkolínec Meadows, from where you descend into the village. It is marked with yellow hiking trail signs.
You can reach the lower station in Hrabovo by car, taxi, on foot, or by Ružomberok’s public transport (the “Hrabovo, konečná” bus stop). Buses run from the railway station (“Železničná stanica” stop).
From the car park in Hrabovo, follow the yellow-marked trail past a row of cottages above the Ružomberok Kalvária (Calvary), where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the town. The trail then continues to the right along a road to a forest.
6. From the upper cable car station at Malinô Brdo: This route is ideal if you would like to visit Vlkolínec via the cable car leading to Malinô Brdo. It is marked with blue and yellow hiking trail signs.
You can reach the lower station in Hrabovo by car, taxi, on foot, or by Ružomberok’s public transport (the “Hrabovo, konečná” bus stop). Buses run from the railway station (“Železničná stanica” stop).
From Hrabovo, take the cable car (check the operating hours at www.skipark.sk or www.bikepark.sk). When you reach the upper station at Malinô Brdo, descend the path to the cottage Chata Daria, where you’ll find a tourist signpost. Follow the blue-marked trail down beneath the rocky outcrop known as Halín. At Vlkolínec Meadows, turn right at the tourist signpost here, off the tarmac onto a reinforced trail – leaving the blue trail and continuing along the yellow marked hiking trail. You pass a shelter and several educational panels on the way to the Farm under Sidorovo. At the farm, turn left along the ridge and descend past another shelter with an information panel to the spring (which is often dry in summer). The gravel path here then leads you into Vlkolínec.
7. Following the red trail over Sidorovo from central Ružomberok: This route begins in the centre of Ružomberok, follows the Sidorovo ridge to its summit, then descends to Vlkolínec Meadows and into the village. It is marked with red and yellow hiking trail signs.
Start your walk in front of the Municipal Authority building by the Marian Column. Follow the red trail through a lime tree avenue, past the Jesuit church, towards the Kalvária area of Ružomberok. Pass between the chapels, and climb to the viewpoint offering panoramic views of the town. At the signpost, leave the tarmac by turning left and pass across the meadow to reach the ridge. Enter the forest path, which leads past the site of a former ski jump. About halfway up, a detour to Veľká Skala is worthwhile for its scenic viewpoint. Continue on to the summit of Sidorovo, where a viewing terrace offers a striking vista over Vlkolínec. Descend steeply through the woodland and boulders. Near the end of the descent, a view opens onto the Halín rock massif. You arrive at the ridge of Vlkolínec Meadows, marked by a trail signpost. Continue left on the yellow-marked trail, passing a shelter and information panel, then on to a spring (which may be dry in summer). The gravel path here then leads you into Vlkolínec.
8. Via the Bear Trail from Hrabovo: An educational trail for children, leading from Hrabovo (starting at the lower cable car station to Malinô Brdo) to Vlkolínec Meadows. Most of this route is not signposted.
You can reach the lower station in Hrabovo by car, taxi, on foot, or by Ružomberok’s public transport (the “Hrabovo, konečná” bus stop). Buses run from the railway station (“Železničná stanica” stop).
The Bear Trail (Medvedia cesta) starts just below the car park at the lower cable car station by a small bridge over a stream that feeds into the reservoir. Follow the asphalt road past blocks of flats and cabins. After the last cabin, turn left onto a forest track crossing the ski slope beneath the cable car. Along the way, stop at information panels to learn about Slovakia’s largest predator, the brown bear. The Bear Trail ends on Vlkolínec Meadows, at the tourist signpost and shelter. From there, follow the yellow-marked hiking trail on the gravel path to the Farm beneath Sidorovo. At the farm, turn left along the ridge and descend past a shelter with an information panel to the spring (which is often dry in summer). The gravel path here then leads you into Vlkolínec.
9. Via Uhlisko (Bird Trail) from Biely Potok: The route via Uhlisko has long been the shortest and preferred route for Vlkolínec locals. It is unmarked.
From the municipal bus stop “Do Uhliska”, reachable by bus from Ružomberok, cross the field in the direction of the Revúca River. A Bird Trail educational panel stands at the stop. Cross the footbridge and follow the road. Turn right briefly before taking a left past family houses. A second Bird Trail panel here is helpful for orientation. After the last house on the right, turn right and follow the path beside the stream. The stream leads into a small valley, which you follow all the way up to Vlkolínec. Along the route, there are old hay huts and a spring with water.
