At the turn of the year, the people of Vlkolínec never forgot to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new.
On the last evening of the year, they gathered for a festive service in the church, which was beautifully illuminated, much like on Christmas Eve. After the service, all the villagers exchanged blessings and wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year outside the church and along their way home.
At home, a celebratory supper was served – fried dumplings with bryndza cheese, drizzled with butter and sprinkled with onion, washed down with sour milk.
On New Year’s morning, well-wishers went around the village, offering their greetings for a happy New Year.
For lunch, a traditional sour cabbage soup with noodles, smoked meat, and potatoes was served. In the afternoon, children went sledging, while adults gathered in the street to chat. In the evening, the village girls came together in one house to play cards.
