For the deeply devout people of Vlkolínec, the christening of a newborn was a momentous occasion.
The midwife, who delivered all the children, decided the date of the christening, as she knew best when children were to be baptised.
Parents had to choose godparents for their child. It was considered a Christian duty to accept such a request, and no one ever refused. The chosen godfather or godmother thus became a lifelong spiritual guide for the child.
The baby, wrapped in a pillow, was carried to the christening by the godmother. The parents and godparents were joined at the ceremony by the siblings.
The ritual in the church was brief. The priest instructed the parents and godparents on raising the child with Christian love and in the Christian spirit.
After returning from the church, it was time to tend to the household and farm chores.
In the evening, a celebration took place at home, attended by family, godparents, and grandparents. There was plenty to drink and cakes were served. The feast usually lasted until ten o’clock, after which it was time to go to bed, for an early start was needed the next day.
